Lady Gaga vs Adele

Lady Gaga vs Adele

Artists in society today portray a certain kind of image to their fans depending on their target market. This image will reinforce their music and brand identity. In this blog I will look into two artists who have opposing target markets but are both considered to be very successful. The two artists I will be looking into are Lady Gaga and Adele. As I have mentioned before, they have very different styles. Lady Gaga is considered to be unique as she conveys herself as 'different' and Adele as she is conveyed to be just a regular women, as a role model to her target market. The song that I have been looking into particularly for these two artists are Lady Gaga's 'Bad Romance' and Adele's 'Someone Like You'. These two singles reinforce their brand identity respectively. Bad Romance was on of Lady Gaga's earlier songs, so for this reason it was used to really display her image of uniqueness to her fans. This is done through many ways such as the clothes she wears, the cinematography and the editing of her songs. At the beginning of the video, she is in the middle of the shot, in quite a dominant expression but at the same time she is using a technique known as hedonism which creates an atmosphere of sexual intent. This was done to show her control in such a difficult situation which again reinforces her brand identity of almost being supernatural. The song constantly changes who is dominant and subordinate. at one stage the men are in control of her then she regains control. In contrast to Adele's 'Someone Like You' it is clear that these two successful artists differ but still appeal and sell singles to their targeted audience through the reinforcement of their image through song lyrics and videos. Adele is more reserved about showing her body on camera because it is not something that her audience would be used to seeing. Adele is considered to almost be quite old fashioned through her image and songs.
